Welsh Assembly Letter - Llandudno Cup 2017

Press Release: Thursday 7 September 2017

Llandudno Cup Charity Golf day at North Wales Golf Club in support of St David’s Hospice.

Employees from Hanson, British Gypsum, Vado Ltd and Velux Ltd held their Llandudno Cup charity golf day at North Wales Golf Club in support of St David’s Hospice.

The Llandudno Cup was inaugurated in 2008 by Les Lawrence, District Sales Manager, Hanson Cement and is held each year in June for customers, friends and colleagues from across the various building trades. Since its conception, it has raised over £17,000 for various charities including the local adult Hospice in Llandudno.

Many of the golfers that participate in the Llandudno Cup are also members of the Builders Merchant Golf Society who have also raised in excess £44,000 for charities from across the North West and North Wales.

Mr Lawrence, co-founder of the Builders Merchant Golf Society said “The Llandudno Cup continues to grow from strength to strength with all participants thoroughly enjoying the occasion where they all come together for such a worthy cause. Each year we aim to raise at least £1000 for St David’s Hospice and we are already making plans for next year. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped raise such a fantastic amount of money for St David’s.”

Kathryn Morgan-Jones, Corporate Fundraiser added “We’re extremely grateful to everyone involved with the Llandudno Cup Charity Golf Day for their ongoing support. The money they raise each year helps us to provide a high level of care to all our patients and their families.

I would also like to thank the North Wales Golf Club for their continued support and for hosting this annual event.

A charity golf day has once again raised valuable funds for a local hospice. Employees from Hanson, British Gypsum, Vado Ltd and Velux Ltd held their Llandudno Cup charity golf day at North Wales Golf Club in support of St David’s Hospice.

The Llandudno Cup

Memories of Les lawrence : The creation of the Llandudno Cup

In 2007, Nigel Stewart of Richard Williams Limited a friend and customer asked me if  I would consider sponsoring a hole at North Wales Golf Club, under the flag of Castle Cement (Hanson Cement) I instantly I said yes and we initially took over the 18th tee.

Hanson ( Castle Cement ) now sponsor the 16th (the OL) and have offered to adopt it!

The NWGC tee sponsor vouchers enabled the company to invite 24 customers to play golf at North Wales Golf Club.

In early 2008 discussions held with Sika Limited had resulted in a golf competition between

our the companies.

The Llandudno Cup was born June 2008 with a 18 a side competition, there were initially 3 teams involved, Castle Cement, Sika Limited and Estimators on Line.

In 2008 and 2009 Sika took the honours.

In 2010 British Gypsum entered a team, that increased the competition to 4 participants and to my delight Hanson won its first star.

In 2011 Sika Limited  and Estimators on Line decided to withdraw from the event,  but Marshalls and Irwin Tools took their places, which is now our current format and In 2011 Irwin took the star

2012 saw Marshall’s victorious, but 2013, 2014 and 2015 Hanson claimed a further 3 stars

Vado Taps Limited who have replaced Irwin Tools for the 2016 Llandudno Cup

The scoring system is as follows,

Each player played off ¾ handicap until 2016 where this changed to 9/10 handicaps and in the earlier days of the event, the contestants played off the white tees.

1 player form each team makes up a 4 ball, the results from each 4 ball is the player with the most points takes 4 for their team, 3 for second 2 for 3rd and 1 for 4th, this ensures every player contributes to the match.

There is a twist to this scoring method.

The Captain of each team picks a Joker from their team (of players) and if the chosen player wins their match he or she doubles their points, so a win would result in 8 points

BUT

If the chosen Joker is beaten in his or her 4 ball all 3 opponents get double points, an example would be

If Jon Wormleighton won against a chosen Joker he would get 8 points if the Joker came second he or she would get 3 points, but 3rd place would now get 4 points and 4th get 2 points.
